Continuing Education Guidelines

 Continuing Education Guidelines

Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions regarding continuing education requirements within the state of Kansas.

How often do I renew my continuing education credits?

All physical therapy professionals within the state of Kansas are required to renew their continuing education every two years. A new cycle begins in January of every odd-numbered year.

How many hours of CEU's am I required to obtain by the end of the two year period?

 · Each physical therapist registered in Kansas is required to have at least 40 total contact hours.

· Each physical therapist assistant certified in Kansas is required to have at least 20 total contact hours.

CE activities shall be related to the field of physical therapy, and can include:
∙ Clinical Skills; · Administration & management techniques;
· Education principles when providing service to patients, families, health
  professionals, health professional students, and the community at large;
· Research projects with published results;
· Legislative issues involving the profession;
∙ Health care and the health care delivery system;
· Documentation, reimbursement, cost effectiveness, quality assurance;
· Problem solving, critical thinking and ethics;
· Multi-disciplinary care.

PLEASE NOTE: No credit is given for taking the State Licensure Exam. Consult your Kansas Practice Act and Rules and Regulations for more information and specifics.  www.ksbha.org

What are the fees for application through the KPTA Professional Competency Committee?

There is a CE tracking fee of $50 (fifty dollars) for PTs and $40 (forty dollars) for PTAs. This fee is due January of each odd-numbered year. The fee is $60 (sixty dollars) and $50 (fifty dollars) respectively, if received after April tenth. Newly licensed Kansas PTs and PTAs will not be responsible for the $10 (ten dollars) late fee. The tracking fee is paid to the KPTA. It is separate from fees paid to the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts (KSBoHA) for licensure renewal.

Individual CE applications are to be submitted to the Chapter Office within 90 days of the course date. Failure to submit applications within 90 days will result in a late fee of $20 (twenty dollars) per course.

If I need to receive approval from the KPTA Professional Competency Committee, what steps do I take?

1. Obtain a current application form from the KPTA Office at (785) 233-5400 or print the appropriate page of this web site.

2. Fill out the application completely and accurately, providing all requested information.

3. Include complete name, address, phone numbers (both work & home), license number and APTA member number with ALL correspondence.

4. Be Consistent! Always use the same name format, license number, etc., and notify the KPTA office at (785) 233-5400 if address or name change takes place.

PLEASE NOTE:  Any application not filled out completely will be returned.

What happens to my application, after I mail it to the KPTA Professional Competency Committee?

Once your application is received, IF all information needed is enclosed, the KPTA Professional Competency Committee will process your application and determine approval of CEs. Any applications approved through the KPTA Professional Competency Committee will be kept in a computer database file.

Anyone participating in the CE tracking service, who has educational credits listed in the computer database, will receive one printout of their coursework after the end of a renewal period. This is usually sent in February of an odd-numbered year. However, your record can be accessed at anytime through the KPTA website www.kpta.com.

In the third quarter of Even numbered years, those participating in the CE tracking service will receive e-mail notifications to check the listings in their database for accuracy. If any inconsistencies are found, please notify the KPTA Office.

What if I disagree with the classification or approval assigned by the KPTA Professional Competency Committee?

You may, at any time, appeal a decision of the Professional Competency Committee to the Physical Therapy Advisory Council. This committee works directly with the KSBoHA and they can review your information and make a determination on your appeal. (Please send all correspondence directly to the Advisory Council at: Kansas State Board of Healing Arts, PT Advisory Council, 235 South Topeka Blvd, Topeka, KS 66603 (785-296-7413).

If I am initially registered/ certified during this renewal period how many continuing education hours will I be required to have?

As a general rule, those licensed less than one year will not be required to submit proof of educational credits. Those licensed less than two years but more than one year are required to submit 1/2 of the required educational credits. Those licensed for two years or more need to submit the full amount of educational credits. You should always check with the Board of Healing Arts at (785) 296-7413 if you are in doubt.

PLEASE NOTE: No credit is given for taking the State Licensure Exam.

How do I receive credit for professional reading,? How many hours may I receive for professional reading?

You may receive 2 (two) hours for it. This particular credit may be received by marking the renewal form provided by the State Board of Healing Arts in the second year of a two year period. This is on your honor, and DOES NOT need to be submitted to the KPTA Professional Competency Committee for approval.

Can I receive credit for inservices and home study courses?

YES! All in-services and home study/internet courses must meet the criteria stated in K.A.R. 100-29-9 of the Rules and Regulations of the State Practice Act. Home study/internet courses are subject to a maximum credit of 10 hours per course. You submit these just as you would any other coursework, including a timeline, or indication of times spent on course and test.

How do I determine whether I should submit an individual application of if the course sponsor will do it for me?

LOOK! If a course is sponsored, it is usually listed on the brochure for the course. ASK! When you sign up to attend any course you should simply ask them if they have applied for pre-approval of their course through the KPTA. They should be able to tell you that your name will be sent on a roster to the KPTA within 30 days of the course. You DO NOT need to complete an application for approval of KPTA sponsored courses. Do not confuse KPTA sponsored courses with APTA sponsored courses. They are different. Also remember that when you sign in at a conference, if we cannot read your name, you won't receive credit...so PRINT legibly.

What procedures or how do I obtain approval for APTA or component courses?

Sponsored courses by APTA or Components (Sections & Chapters) will be accepted for CE credit. Applications must be submitted with speakers initials or APTA stamp to receive credit. Courses approved by other state regulatory agencies or professional organizations will be reviewed on a case by case basis.  All CE activities must meet the stated requirements in the Kansas Practice Act and Rules and Regulations.

What constitutes Proof of Attendance?

1. Sign in sheet - name, license number, date.
2. Letter from speaker.
3. Certificate of attendance.
4. Speakers initial on brochure or a course description including any attendance at conference with multiple break-out sessions.
5. APTA stamp at APTA sponsored events.

SPECIAL NOTES:
