PR and Marketing Plan Approved
On July 21 the KPTA board approved a PR and Marketing plan, which was one of our 2006 strategic planning goals. This program is designed to provide resources and information to reach as wide an audience as possible regarding our profession. Developing a greater public awareness of what our profession does and how we can help the public is critical to developing the grass roots support necessary to support our legislative initiatives and protect and enhance reimbursement for our services. In the upcoming months leading up to PT month in October 2006, resources will be developed to help individual PT’s and clinics spread the word and provide information to the public about our profession. During PT month 2006, mass media in the form of Kansas Public Radio underwriting will be utilized to present our message to a wider public audience. Finally, in the upcoming year increased attention will be placed on getting our message out to the public in the form of health fair participation, informational presentations in print, radio and television media outlets and press releases regarding physical therapy issues and activities. Membership participation is critical to get this effort off the ground. Make plans to get our message out during PT month and throughout the year. If you have any questions or need any additional information please contact Sean Shire, communications chair at kushires@hotmail.com

KPTA Offers ‘Student/New Graduate Mentor Program’
Your PT/PTA experience could benefit those starting out in the profession. Students in Kansas PT & PTA schools will always have questions about the profession, the work environment, or the culture of the current workplace. Those questions are best answered by those with experience in our profession.

In an effort to provide opportunities for students, the KPTA Board of Directors (BOD) recognized the effectiveness of mentoring. Many organizations look to develop, counsel, and model leadership through mentoring the novice to eventually fill a leadership role. In developing this ‘Student/New Graduate Mentor Program,’ the BOD also sought to provide assistance in growing the workforce of PT/PTA’s in the state. The mentor’s role begins with contacting a student seeking a mentor during the student’s last semester of school. The initial contact should provide the student with basic information to become acquainted. The student will then have someone to look for at KPTA Conferences, APTA Combined Sections Meetings, or other gatherings that tend to be uncomfortable or confusing for the new graduate. The duration of the relationship following the student’s graduation is recommended to be at least three months, but truly up to the mentor and graduate.

We continue to receive names of interested PT/PTA’s, yet we will always benefit from many more interested in benefiting from the relationship. Please contact Mary Moore, KPTA Executive Director, by emailing her at mary.moore@kpta.com or by calling the KPTA office at 785.233.5400.

Kansas PT's Featured in Public Radio Feature on Fall Prevention

From the "Kansas Health" section of the Kansas Public Radio web site:

"The older we get, the more likely we are to be seriously injured by falling. Every hour, one older American dies and 183 more require emergency room treatment because of fall-related injuries. Experts say much of this suffering and expense could be eliminated. Kansas Public Radio’s Bryan Thompson reports as we continue our series, 'Kansas Health: A Prescription for Change'."

This audio story from October 10, 2005 features Kansas physical therapists Diana Torline and Alan Smith.
